Lake Teletskoye
Lake Teletskoye, known to the local Altaian people as 'Altyn-Kol' (Golden Lake), is the largest lake in the Altai Republic and one of Russia's most beautiful. At 325 metres deep it is the second deepest lake in Russia after Baikal. Enclosed by the steep, densely forested ridges of the Altai Mountains and fed by more than 70 rivers and streams, Teletskoye is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Golden Mountains of Altai and forms the heart of the Altaisky Nature Reserve.
๐ Geography and Ecosystem
- Waterfalls: Dozens of waterfalls cascade from the surrounding mountains into the lake, the most spectacular being Korbu Falls on the eastern shore โ accessible only by boat.
- Taiga Forest: The surrounding slopes are blanketed in dense Siberian cedar and fir forest, providing habitat for bear, wolverine, sable, otter, and the endangered snow leopard in higher zones.
- Chulyshman River: The main inlet river brings glacial meltwater from the Chulyshman plateau, home to the remarkable Pazyryk valley and pillar-stone formations.
- Climate Divide: The lake acts as a climatic boundary; the northern shore has a relatively mild continental climate, while the southern end, deep in the mountains, is significantly harsher and more remote.
